Bowling Alleys: The New Town Squares

In older times towns would be built with a town square where citizens could meet, trade, and socialize, the last being what most looked forward to.  If there is a modern day equivalent in American towns, the bowing alley serves as today’s place to meet and socialize as a town.  A good bowling alley is easy to find.  Every city and even many small towns have one, and not only is bowling a fun activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, but most bowling alleys also have a juke box, a great kitchen, and areas to sit down and eat.

One of the many great aspects of a bowling alley is the versatility.  If you want to take the kids out for the day and do something you can all enjoy, the bowling alley works (and can even save the hassle of cooking).  If you’re a bored teenager, you can go bowling by yourself, or with a group of friends.  If the competitive itch won’t go away, there are bowling leagues for virtually every age group out there from grade school to senior citizen.  Few versions of entertainment allow such a wide diversity of people to interact with one another and to enjoy the day.

The bowling alley is a great place because bowling is an activity that you do not have to be in great shape to participate in.  There are no wind sprints, no weight training needed.  As long as you can pick up a ball and throw it, you can enjoy a great day of bowling whether for recreation or to feed that competitive need that is so hard to feed after the school years are over.  Very few places offer an activity for such a wide range of people across all age and income groups the way that a bowling alley does.

Bowling alleys are keeping up with the times, as well.  The traditional bowling alley still remains strong, but now bowling alleys can also often be found in mansions, on college campuses, or even in mega-malls.  Some specifically shoot for a younger crowd, with neon lights, and at night a black light/laser show effect that allows youths to bowl in an almost futuristic club type setting.  These bowling alleys tend to be very popular with teenagers, and even the college crowd.  Many larger colleges have their own bowling alley to keep students entertained and give them an option to kick back and blow off some steam after midterms.

The bowling alley, especially for small towns, has become more than just a place to go bowling.  It is a building that has become a place for people to meet, enjoy each others’ company, and compete.  Young and old come together to bowl, to eat, to date, to spend time with family and friends, co-workers and loved ones.  Bowling is a great activity for all types of people and age groups, and add in great food and great company and the bowling alley really has become the place for people to be.
