How Many Bowling Balls Are There?
Shopping for a
bowling ball would be something that you’d think would be easy,
but think again! With technology, the internet, and general
interest, so many advances have been made that finding a bowling ball
is not as simple as just looking for a good design, finding a "bowling
ball size" and weight and ordering. Balls are made from many
different types of material. You can buy "normal" bowling balls
that are generic in make and are similar to the type that are found in
abundance in bowling alleys all across the country, or if you are a
serious amateur player, or really want to get into bowling, you can get
a custom made bowling ball for yourself.
Bowling balls can even be made for specific types of shots, not unlike
the way a golfer has a whole bag of clubs to choose from depending on
what shot he needs to make. Most bowling balls are made of a
special plastic and are referred to in bowling ball stores as urethane
balls. They are also called "straight balls" because they
don’t spin a lot. These are the most common bowling balls
to find in alleys because the ball goes straight at the angle you throw
them. These are the types of bowling balls that beginners should
use in order to get used to the sport. What most people
don’t know, is that most professional bowlers use two bowling
balls. The "straight ball" is the one they use to hit a single
pin to pick up a spare.
Another type of bowling ball is the "hook ball." This is the type
of ball that most pro bowlers and many long time bowlers use. The
"hook ball" is called such because it has a sharper and faster spin,
which tends to throw the pins into one another and thereby gets more
strikes. The downside is that they are harder to control because
of the spin, and that is a major reason why the straight balls are
recommended for beginners. Also as a general rule, if the lanes
are in extremely good shape, then a hook ball functions much better,
while on a less than ideal lane, the straight ball is a much safer
choice.
Another major consideration when choosing a bowling ball is the proper
weight. If you’re bowling at a bowling alley, the most
important thing is to find a ball you are comfortable with. You
don’t want a ball that is too heavy and puts a lot of stress on
your arm and wrist. Likewise, you don’t want a ball that is
too light. If you are looking at a custom made bowling ball, talk
to the professionals you are buying from, or look up information on web
sites to decide what is best for you. Most professional who
customize bowling balls advise on a ball that is a couple pounds
heavier than your favorite alley ball, since a customized ball should
fit your hand more properly, and therefore be more comfortable.
That is the most important facet: remember to pick a bowling ball that
is comfortable on your hand and arm, and enjoy the game!
